Asbestos – What is the Real Deal on Asbestos in Columbus?

asbestos_house_diagramThere are a couple of health related problems that linger in Buyers’ minds when buying homes in Columbus and Central Ohio.  One is Radon and my clients know how I feel radon and if you don’t know, I’ll do a post on that soon. The other is Asbestos.

In Columbus, you run into asbestos in two primary places–asbestos shingles covering the outside of the home and asbestos wrapped around the HVAC ductwork — sometimes only in tape form.  Usually, those aren’t too big of a concern as long as they aren’t disturbed.  Asbestos related health problems are big deals, though, and today we have  a bit of a guest post from Jesse Herman, the Awareness Coordinator at the Mesothelioma Cancer Center (www.asbestos.com)…..

Citizens who are purchasing or remodeling an older home in the Ohio real estate market, there are many variables to consider. Homes that were built prior to 1980 have a strong likelihood of containing asbestos materials. With a steady progression of green sustainable methods of building and technology, there are many different ways to make sure your property is free of corrosive substances.

With the state of Ohio depending heavily on industrial giants such as: BP Amoco, Sunoco, Shell Oil and American Ship-Building shipyard, asbestos became one of the most sought after building materials due to its resistance to many deteriorating conditions and easy usability. Used throughout the 20th century as a prominent form of insulation, piping and brake lining, asbestos was widely acclaimed to its qualities as being flame resistant.

Long term exposure to asbestos has caused many citizens, workers and military veterans to develop a severe form of asbestos cancer known as mesothelioma. There were an estimated 1,624 fatalities between 1979 and 2001 from asbestos-related illnesses. Mesothelioma treatments has varied affects on patients. Factors that impact prognosis include: latency period, age of diagnosis and cigarette smoking.

Asbestos removal in public facilities, homes and workplaces should be performed by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor. These contractors have been important in extracting methods of asbestos and other toxic materials which serve as a threat to many people’s health. The Ohio Department of Health created an asbestos program that assists all citizens in finding local abatement contractors. It is highly recommended to not disturb any suspected asbestos as this can adversely release nay toxic fibers into the air and cause exposure.

Not only will asbestos removal make for a healthier, more vibrant home, it can save you money. The United Nations Environmental Program states that usage of recycled materials such as green insulation methods and lighting can reduce energy use by 25 percent annually. Removing asbestos by a licensed professional is worth the expense and time. It will allow you to live with piece of mind, free of health damaging materials.
