Columbus gets 20 Inches of Snow — And I Show Homes During a Blizzard

Columbus loves to sensationalize the weather. This weekend, it was warranted.

I often tell people moving to Columbus that it rarely snows here.  And when it does, it doesn’t snow very much but Columbusites still freak out and the News still sensationalizes what snow we did get.  Well, according to official measurements at the Airport, we got 20 inches of snow Friday and Saturday — the biggest snowfall ever in Central Ohio.  Ever.

I had a buyer-couple coming in From Houston this weekend.  This is the weekend they HAD to put an offer on something.  They had been here another weekend a few weeks back but that was when we thought Husband’s company was going to purchase their Houston home and we were looking at completely different homes than we did this time.  We saw about 20 homes Friday and Sunday during snow, sleet and ice pellets falling from the sky.  The vacant homes were the worst since no one had bothered to shovel a path to their doors, we had to guess about where the sidewalks and drives were and step in each other’s footprints so as not to be consumed by a foot of snow.

This Bexley home has snow pushed up onto the sidewalk from the streetThanks to every home owner who allowed us into their home this weekend.  We really didn’t mind that you were there while we looked at your house and never would have wanted you to leave the house in that weather.  Sunday afternoon it came down to two homes.  We picked the one that made the most sense for the upcoming 2 1/2 years of their lives and we’re closing in 11 days if all goes well.

Kudos to the City of Columbus, the Ohio Department of Transportation and all the municipalities I drove around this weekend including Bexley, Upper Arlington and Hilliard.  The main roads were plowed, salted and, by Sunday afternoon, practically clear and dry.  The side streets are still awful but the temperatures are looking to stay in the 30s and 40s this week.  It’ll be a wet one.

  1. Joe, I can’t imagine having to show houses in that type of weather. However, in today’s market we need to do what we need to do! We only had about 1/4″ while you were blanketed with snow. You can always come down to our Scenic City for a visit. Keep up the great blog. David
