Gay Street and the City of Columbus have wrapped a nearly $8 million project spanning six months that opens Gay Street to two-way traffic. It seems like a long, long time ago, the West side of Gay street was supposed to be involved in that project also. I don’t like that it dead ends at Front Street behind the Police HQ. That needs to be opened and two way also, but I’m guessing in this post 9–11 world, that may take a while.
drivers now have east- and west-bound access
several additions for pedestrians including —
rebuilt traffic signals
upgraded infrastructure
creating landscaped medians and trees
decorative light poles in the corridor
new curbs and sidewalks
new traffic pattern should make vehicles travel slower
revised crosswalks require pedestrians to cross a shorter distance

The project, which cost an estimated $7.7 million, is part of the city’s larger move to give downtown a neighborhood feel.
