Why Columbus?
Columbus’ Best Radio Station – 90.5 WCBE

I rarely post anything off topic on my blog and I only sometimes get on a soapbox, but I just had one of those moments that made me think about how much I really, really love this station and how lucky we are in Columbus to have it. In addition to all the Public Radio staples that I can’t get enough of, like Fresh Air, Morning Edition, Marketplace, All Things Considered, and Car Talk, WCBE has locally programmed (and they play local music) music from about 9-3 each weekday. That’s what makes it special and that’s why I’m calling them out. My radio dial, for about the last ten years now, never leaves the station.
I am busy selling real estate by day so it’s not as often as I like that I get to enjoy the day’s music programming but the eclectic mix of blues, jazz, singer songwriter, reggae, world music, folk and alt-country is unbelievable. Maggie Brennen, the afternoon host and program director and Mike Taylor, the AM host, put it out there day in and day out from 9-3 and it’s never, ever bad or even questionable (Check out this afternoon’s play list as an example).
Somehow, they blend all those different and varied genres and it all makes great sense. All of my favorite albums and artists over the last decade have been introduced to my by WCBE and one of my all time favorite artists they’ve turned me on to was Martin Sexton, circa 1998. Martin is town tomorrow (conveniently my birthday) and my wife and I will be catching his show after a bite to eat at Rossi’s.
This afternoon I called over to the studio (located on the campus of Fort Hayes alternative high school in downtown Columbus) and asked Maggie if she’d play some Martin Sexton (She did, she played The Beast in Me from The American Album, my all time favorite Sexton Song btw), how the new album was (awesome she said and she’s right because I’m streaming it now as I write this) and she told me he’d be live in-studio tomorrow afternoon. How cool is that
